SOUTH ST. PAUL — A Minnesota family is preparing to bury a soldier who went missing during the Korean War.
The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office confirms that the remains of Sgt. Edward James O'Brien have been identified and will be buried during a ceremony with full military honors at Fort Snelling next week.
O'Brien was a member of the Army's 25th Infantry Division. Chinese troops launched a surprise attack on the division in November of 1950.
O'Brien's great-nephew, David O'Brien, says the family did research to find out more about their missing relative.
Through a DNA database, O'Brien's family was eventually able to find him. The family learned that the remains were recovered in 1998, but it took 10 years before a match was made.
