Critics attempt to roll back referendum in Frazee

FRAZEE -- Critics are trying to roll back a school levy referendum passed last November for the Frazee-Vergas school district.

They are circulating a petition calling for it to either be overturned or reduced by half. They need about 630 qualified signatures to get it on the November ballot.

The district won the $1,000 per student levy after four previous defeats spurred talk the district could be wiped off the map.

District Superintendent Deron (Darin) Stender says the levy amounts to about an extra $220 per year in taxes on a $100,000 property

Stender says those behind the petition were also critical of past referendums. He says they claim their tax burden is too high and they're dissatisfied with the district and its policies.

Stender says other districts that passed referendums in November could face similar challenges.
